Ra'ui

Ra'ui - Koka Lagoon Cruises.

Ra'ui is the traditional environment protection system that involves traditional leaders banning the harvest of marine resources in designated areas. Traditionally it was imposed by the chief of the tribe banning the harvesting of food resources of a set period of time to enable stocks to increase.

The main purpose of the ra'ui is to help protect the marine environment and to contribute towards an increase in marine life for present and future generations (Passfield and Tiraa 1998). There are 12 ra'ui areas in Rarotonga including in Tikioki, where Koka Lagoon Cruises has set up its marine site. Some ra'ui are short-term and allow harvesting on a rotational basis, others are long term. Parts of Tikioki ra'ui are now permanently reserved.

Overview

Experience the beauty of the popular Muri lagoon aboard Koka Lagoon Cruises' spacious glass bottom boat. You will cruise through the Muri lagoon to the island sounds of the ukulele playing crew. Snorkel and swim amongst tropical fish at the vibrant marine conservation site. View the impressive giant clams and the stonefish enclosures. Top off the experience with a delicious fish BBQ on Koromiri island, and a bonus cultural experience with coconut tree climbing show and coconut husking demonstration.

Locally built and designed with island motifs, onboard lights and music, this modern spacious and comfortable 35 foot glass bottom vessel is made with aluminum framing and natural roofing. With a 35 seating capacity, generous leg room, safe hand railing, life jackets and a ramp for easy access it is wheelchair compatible and caters to all ages. With such a spacious vessel Koka Lagoon Cruise is able to cater for larger groups or hired out for special occasions.

Koka Lagoon Cruises is proud to announce that a percentage of its sales is donated to the marine conservation.
