Island Car Rentals
OverviewIf you decide to rent a car while you are visiting the Cook Islands you should first know that driving is on the left-hand side of the road and drivers of all vehicles are required to have a current Cook Islands driver's license. A license is available for $20 from the Police Station in downtown Avarua, when you present your driver's license. Visitors can get a temporary license from vehicle rental companies when renting their vehicles. Please not that it is only valid for 24 hours. If you wish to ride a motorbike while in the Cook Islands and your driver's license does not specify that you can ride a motorbike, you will be required to undertake a practical driving test for an additional $5NZ. The speed limit on the open road (outside of populated areas) is 50km/h (30mph) and in restricted areas (towns, and villages) the speed zone is reduced; town is 30km/h (18mph), and villages are 50km/h (30mph). |
