Hotel DeBrett

Hotel DeBrett - Hotel DeBrett. Copyright Hotel DeBrett.

Settled in downtown Auckland, Hotel DeBrett links two unique precincts – High Street’s hip fashion and Shortland Street’s tailored commerce. Hotel DeBrett’s iconic building has been stylishly reinterpreted into a 25-room luxury boutique hotel. Every room is individually designed and complemented with eclectic furniture, New Zealand art and photography.

The famous Housebar has been meticulously restored as Auckland’s premier meeting place. A private drawing room has been created for exclusive use by hotel guests – while a glass roofed atrium and courtyard form the central focal point for guests and diners at DeBretts Kitchen. At street level the colourful Cornerbar, with a touch of NZ retro has an emphasis on local craft beers and boutique wines. Enjoy an array of delicious sweets, savouries and fine teas for our weekend high tea.

Overview

Hotel DeBrett's iconic building has been stylishly reinterpreted into a 25-room luxury boutique hotel. Every room is individually designed and complemented with eclectic furniture, New Zealand art and photography.

The famous Housebar has been meticulously restored as Auckland's premier meeting place. A private drawing room has been created for exclusive use by hotel guests - while a glass roofed atrium and courtyard form the central focal point for guests, diners at Kitchen Restaurant and locals to mingle.

our story

The hotel has a long and colorful history. Built as The Commercial Hotel in 1841 as one of Auckland’s first hotels. It survived two fires, and two rebuilds, before the current building was erected in 1925.Dominion Breweries acquired the hotel in 1959, and after a major renovation it was renamed Hotel DeBrett, and soon established itself as the hotel of choice for sophisticated travellers. In 1984 new operators Don Fletcher and Maurice Crosby gave it yet another make-over, with an emphasis on the bars and restaurants. Through the mid eighties it was the hippest meeting place for Aucklander’s, with particular appeal to the fashion and media set.

An icon re-imagined
When John Courtney and Michelle Deery bought the building in 2007 the defunct backpackers was home to a flock of pigeons. It took almost two years to transform the near ruin into the highly awarded hotel you see today. Michelle worked with a team of architects, designers and artists to create 25 rooms and suites, and at the heart of the hotel, a soaring glass roofed atrium, which now houses debretts kitchen. Our aim was to create a warm, welcoming environment, where our guests felt at home, but with a quirky, unpredictable décor. Always with an emphasis on offering a New Zealand experience, from the contents of the minibar, the art on the walls, and the genuine, friendly but professional service.
