Kulala Desert Lodge is located on the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve and provides convenient and close access to the iconic red dunes of Sossusvlei. Sossusvlei is situated within Africa's largest conservation area, the Namib Naukluft Park, which is also home to the world's oldest desert – the Namib. Atop this vast arid landscape lie what some consider the world's largest sand dunes. The highest of these sand mountains, blazing rust-red in the early morning sun, rises nearly 300 metres above the valley floor.

Overview

The Namib Desert is the second largest desert in the world. Situated on the 37,000 hectare Kulala Wilderness Reserve, bordering the Namib Naukluft Park, Kulala Desert Lodge lies in the heart of the Namib. It offers magnificent views of the famous red dunes of Sossusvlei as well as spectacular mountain scenery.

The land on which the Kulala Wilderness Reserve sits was originally was used for subsistence goat farming. As such, precious little indigenous wildlife remained. After a removal programme in 1996 rid the area of stock fences and exotic species, the wildlife slowly began to return. The area was then extended to adjoin the massive Namib Naukluft Park – and became the Kulala Wilderness Reserve.

Early morning guided game drives to the spectacular dunes are via a private gate on the Tsauchab River. Game drives and walks are also offered on the private reserve with incredible scenery, desert game and smaller desert adapted fauna and flora. Early morning ballooning is another option offered (booked separately), weather permitting. The 60-90 minute balloon safari offers a truly unique experience of soaring silently above the magnificent desert sand dunes and ending with a champagne breakfast served at the landing site.
